Dubai, October 12th 2018
Around 1,000 attendees, including local authority, diplomatic representatives and the Spanish Community participated in the Spanish National Day at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Abu Dhabi hosted by the Spanish Embassy in collaboration with the Spanish Business Council. His Excellency DR. Thani Ahmed, Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates attended also this memorable event.
During the welcome speech, Guillermo Cobelo Chairman of Spanish Business Council and Country Manager of Tecnicas Reunidas Middle East highlighted the milestone achieved by the Spanish Business Council as it is on the brink of converting into the first Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the Middle East. He took the opportunity to congratulate all the members of the Spanish Business Council for this phenomenal achievement.
Guillermo Cobelo continued telling the importance of the SBC since it was founded in 2005 despite changes has been made in the past 13 years, what has remained unchanged is the underlying aim of bringing the Spanish community closer together. Finally, he thanked the generous sponsors who contribute each year to put this event together with the Embassy of Spain.
H.E. Antonio Álvarez Barthe, Ambassador of Spain enhanced the historical and economical excellent relations between Spain and the UAE where both countries have similar paths in terms of progress. He also provide some economic important figures: bilateral trade has stayed above the 2 billion euro for the third year in a row. Spanish exports to the UAE reached 1.74 billion euro in 2017 and spanish imports from UAE total 340 million euro. These figures have been possible thanks to the 7.400 Spanish companies that exported to UAE in 2017, out of which around 2600 are regular exporters to this market. These companies consider the UAE a trade hub for the region and more the 200 have decided to set up their headquarters in the Middle East and they are involved in key projects in the country.
“Another remarkable development has been the decision to upgrade the Spanish Business Council to the status of Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain, a change that will be formalized very briefly” commented the Ambassador.
The Ambassador continued expressing his gratitute to all the sponsors and the Spanish Business Council for their continuous support, because would not be possible without them.
H.E Antonio Alvarez Barthe concluded his speech saying that he is honoured and privileged to represent Spain in a country which is known for its quest for excellence and which has become a benchmark in many areas.
