Dubai, 17th October 2019
Around 1,400 attendees, including local authority, diplomatic representatives and the Spanish Community participated in the Spanish National Day at Fairmont Bab Al Bahr Abu Dhabi hosted by the Spanish Embassy and the Spanish Business Council. His Excellency DR. Thani Ahmed, Minister of Climate Change and Environment of the United Arab Emirates attended also this memorable event.
The reception started with a warm welcome from the Ambassador and the Chairman of Spanish Business Council to the Sponsors and the guests. Jaime Iglesias Sánchez-Cervera, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Spain in the UAE conducted the ceremony, were the national anthems from both countries were heard in a great atmosphere.
During the welcome speech, Guillermo Cobelo Chairman of Spanish Business Council and Country Manager of Tecnicas Reunidas Middle East express his proud on the increase of Spanish companies and residents, “a remarkable feat” which he refer has been made possible because of the warm hospitality of the United Arab Emirates.
He also underlined major events held in the United Arab Emirates such as the Special Olympics, the Pope’s visit and the opening of the first Hindu temple to be held in early 2020, symbols of the Year of Tolerance that were celebrated in 2019. Within the economic sphere, he affirmed that “the future for Spanish companies in the UAE certainly seems more promising and encouraged Spanish companies, with or without a presence in the United Arab Emirates, to participate in the Spain Pavilion of Expo Dubai 2020, a golden opportunity not to be missed”. Regarding the main achievements of the SBC this year, he cited the transformation into the Official Chamber of Commerce of Spain in the UAE and the exceed the mark of the hundred members. He also addressed some excited words to the Armed Forces of Spain. “Head high, you are brave, our brave, thank you for taking care of us, thank you for defending us, thank you for representing us, whether in the Castellana or abroad” he said. He finished his words with an energetic “Long live Spain!”
H.E. Antonio Álvarez Barthe, Ambassador of Spain start remarking the number of Spaniards in UAE that have reached a new record. 6.006 Spanish people are registered at the Spanish Consulate, which represent a growth of 20% comparing to last year. Referring the excellence of quality of the work they do here, it is recognized by the authorities and society, and the team of the Embassy is determined to continuous do their best to support all the Spanish community.
The ambassador explained in this year 2019, Spain commemorates the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the Earth, “the achievement of Magallanes, Elcano and his crew that many historians consider the beginning of the globalization era”. As a reflection on the pride that Spaniards felt in celebrating this feat, the same pride that UAE citizens felt when astronaut Hazza Al Mansoori greeted the world from the International Space Station.
Spain and UAE are ambitious countries, which share the noble goal of reaching new horizons.
“But it is not the only thing that Spain and the United Arab Emirates have in common; they also share the desire to become a source of progress for the world, to make it more stable, safer, more prosperous and more just.” commented the Ambassador.
The Ambassador continued expressing his gratitude to all the sponsors and the Spanish Business Council for their continuous support, because would not be possible without them.
